Plumbing covers taps, leaks, toilets, drainage and bathroom fittings. The part that catches people out is not the repair itself — it is the difference between a quick unblocking and replacing a rusted cast-iron stack.

All reference prices are in Hong Kong dollars (HKD).
Every price here is the published starting rate for the work shown, not a quotation. The tradesman prices the job after seeing the site, so parts, transport and access to old buildings can move the final figure.

Common questions
Why does a drain unblocking quote range so widely?
The job that looks like one visit can turn into a different one once the technician is on site. A blockage close to the gully is cleared quickly with a manual rod, while a blockage deep in a stack or a collapsed section may need a power machine, an opening in the wall and a second visit. The distance from the flat to the drain, and whether the pipe can be reached from outside, move the price as much as the blockage itself.
Does the price cover leak detection, the parts and making good afterwards?
Leak detection is usually listed separately from the repair, and the quote should say what it includes: a water test, isolating the supply and whether a camera goes down the pipe. Parts should be named, and making good after cutting into a wall or lifting a tile is often another line on the quote. Ask which of these are inside the price, because the repair is only part of what you pay for.
A tap swap looks like a small job. Why is one quote several times another?
The tap itself is rarely the issue; the pipe behind it is. A new mixer on an old pipe needs an adaptor or the whole run converted, and a leaking joint inside a wall cannot be reached without opening the tiling. Some quotes include the new tap and the fitting of it, others treat the tap as a separate purchase for you to make, so compare what each quote covers rather than the total alone.
Who is responsible when the leak is in a shared drain?
The vertical stack and the branch below the floor are usually common parts of the building, so the cost sits with the owners and is handled through the management office, while the pipework inside your own flat is yours. When the cause is not clear, the technician tests in stages and writes down where the water came from, because that written finding is what decides who pays.
What warranty does a plumbing job usually come with, and what about the parts?
The workmanship is normally covered for a stated period, and the fittings or valves carry the terms of their own supplier. Ask for that period in writing, and ask what happens if the same joint starts leaking again within it. A repair to a hidden pipe behind a tiled wall is much easier to settle if the technician took photos of the pipework before the wall was closed, so ask whether they did.
How do I check a plumbing job before the technician leaves?
Run the tap and the shower for a few minutes and watch the joints and the pipework below the sink. Check that the drain runs freely and that there is no slow drip in the toilet pan. Ask the technician to show the isolation valve and where it is, because that is what you need if a pipe ever bursts, and confirm whether the floor was made good.
Before you book
Ask for the job to be split into finding the fault, the repair and the making good, because these are often charged separately and the middle one is what people budget for by mistake. The cause of a leak can only be confirmed once the pipe is opened up, so get the total confirmed on site before the work starts. Agree who removes the old fittings and whether the water stays on during the work, and settle the balance after you have seen the joints and the floor checked.
How the prices work
The reference figures cover a straight visit, such as replacing a tap cartridge or a toilet valve, and they are a starting level. A real quote moves with the length of pipe to be replaced, whether the work is inside a wall or under a floor, the access to the drain, the parts used and whether the technician needs a second visit to reach the fault. A clean part replacement on an exposed pipe usually sits close to the reference figure.
